EWADE
The European Workshops on Aircraft Design Education (EWADE) have formed a forum for academic staff active in Aircraft Design education at European universities. EWADE is an activity under CEAS (Council of European Aerospace Societies).
A total of 9 workshops have been held, every two years, since the first edition in 1994. The 10th edition will be hosted by the Department of Aerospace Engineering (DIAS), University of Naples "Federico II".
Research and education in Aircraft Design have an old tradition at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Naples. Prof. Gen. Umberto Nobile, the famous designer, pilot of airships, and polar explorer was also the founder of the Aerospace school in Naples. Prof. Luigi Pascale, a former professor at Department of Aerospace Engineering and famous designer of several light and commuter airplanes, has continued this long tradition in aerospace studies and established himself a school in Aircraft Design.
The 10th edition of the European Workshop on Aircraft Design Education will be hosted by the University of Naples "Federico II", Department of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. The foundation of the University of Naples, that since 1987 bears the name of its first promoter, Frederick II Hohenstaufen, King of Sicily and Head of the Roman Empire, dates back to 1224.
The number of enrolled students and that of the teaching staff have made of the University of Naples one of the largest Universities in the country with thirteen Faculties.
Naples
Some of the most important Italian aerospace industries and research centers are located in Naples area and Campania region. Among them it is worth to mention: Alenia Aeronautica (Pomigliano d'Arco), Piaggio Aero (Pozzuoli), Tecnam (Capua), OMASud (Capua), Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA, Capua).
The Faculty of Engineering is one of the oldest and largest in Italy. The first school of Engineering was set in Naples in 1811 during the Napoleonic occupation of the Kingdom of Naples. Joachim Murat, King of Naples and Napoleon brother-in-law, decreed the foundation of the "Scuola di Applicazione di Ponti e Strade" (School for the construction of bridges and roads) on 4th March 1811. The school was modelled on the Ecole d'Application des ponts et chausses, which had been reorganized by Napoleon in 1804.
The school was first hosted in the historical buildings of the University and then moved to a new location in 1965, when the new building of the Faculty of Engineering designed by the reknowned Italian architect Luigi Cosenza was opened in Fuorigrotta, a relatively newer area of Naples.Since then the Faculty has developed fast and nowadays offers more than 20 degree courses, several MSc. Programmes and Doctorate Schools.
In 2011 the Faculty will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of its Foundation.
Department of Aerospace Engineering (DIAS)
The Department of Aerospace Engineering (DIAS) is a continuation of a long and glorious tradition in the study, research and dissemination of aerospace disciplines. This tradition has its distant roots in the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, founded in 1926 by Prof. Gen. Umberto Nobile, the famous designer and pilot of airships, and polar explorer.
The DIAS, founded in January 2007, comes from the will of the neapolitan academic aerospace community to collect a prestigious institution in the great legacy of aerospace research and education, to promote a unified look and even more effective dissemination and the culture of the aerospace disciplines.
